The Philosophical Perspective: Deconstructing the Foundations of Academic Segregation

By Ilan Moyal

The public and legal debate regarding gender segregation in Israeli higher education is typically framed as a clash between religious freedom and gender equality. This paper seeks to propose a different point of departure. Rather than asking whether segregation is permissible or prohibited, it interrogates the specific concept of the human being, of morality, and of society that underpins it. Through a combined reading of Nietzsche, Deleuze, and the philosophical framework of Transism, I argue that gender segregation is not merely an institutional arrangement; it is an active mechanism that produces and reflects a profound conception of human existence and social engineering.

1. The Genealogy of Morality and Historical Becoming

In On the Genealogy of Morals, Friedrich Nietzsche deconstructs the assumption that morality is an eternal, objective truth. Moral values and institutional structures are the historical products of power struggles and changing dynamics of control. Therefore, gender segregation cannot be viewed as a "natural fact" or a neutral cultural accommodation; it is the concrete expression of a specific moral structure born out of specific historical contingencies. The core question is not whether a moral order exists, but what kind of morality we actively choose to produce and cultivate through our public institutions.

2. The "Morality of Fear" and Risk Management

When an academic institution adopts gender segregation, it operates under a foundational premise that can be termed a "morality of fear." This paradigm views the unmediated human encounter between genders as an event that is inherently hazardous—a risk that must be preemptively managed through physical distance and spatial containment. Consequently:

Rather than fostering a culture of mutual responsibility and education, the system institutes a framework of structural suspicion and surveillance.

Human beings cease to be encountered as autonomous, evolving subjects; instead, they are refashioned through the sterile lens of institutional risk management.

3. The Diminishment of Immanence and Knowledge Production

According to the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, creativity, knowledge, and subjectivity emerge exclusively from the encounter with difference within a "plane of immanence." This plane represents a space where differences do not erase one another but instead generate new possibilities of existence.
When a society substitutes genuine encounters with artificial segregation, it severely diminishes the baseline conditions required for the generation of new knowledge. The academy, whose defining purpose is to cultivate critical thinking, risks transforming intellectual dialogue into a rigid system of predetermined boundaries.

4. Transism and Gendered Becoming

The philosophical framework of Transism posits the human being as an inherently becoming entity. The individual is not a static, closed essence, but an ongoing process of becoming. Similarly, gender relations are not a frozen, binary system but a fluid space of learning, transformation, and development.

From this perspective, attempting to entrench physical and gendered boundaries within the academy represents an anachronistic effort to force society back into archaic structures. History does not move in a circle; it continually synthesizes new layers of existence. The true challenge facing higher education is not the preservation of borders or the erasure of differences, but the creation of safe spaces for encounters rooted in a "morality of becoming." This ethos shifts the gravity of human coexistence away from control, suspicion, and stagnation, moving instead toward dialogue, shared responsibility, and mutual freedom.
