The Recurrence of Nothingness – Unveiling the "Nothing" Shall Bring Forth the Understanding of the "Is"

By Ilan Moyal,

We live in a world of abundance. This is a fact. It is an additional fact that this abundance is not distributed equally, due to numerous factors that have coalesced over thousands of years of human existence. Most of these causes are rooted in human nature and the drives that propel it (see article: Beyond the Drive). [1, 2, 3]

Frequently, we find ourselves contemplating all those things we lack, rather than expressing gratitude for what we possess. Far beyond what we have or lack, we will never content ourselves with the answer: "There is nothing, and that is that.". Out of this refusal, we invented the notion of "achieving something out of nothing" (ex nihilo). [1, 2]

On the face of it, the "Nothing" is a pure illusion. It simply is not, and ostensibly, we ought to treat it as such, as the very definition of the concept demands. Yet, nevertheless, I find it difficult to determine which precedes which: our own primordial finitude, or our ontic belonging to the foundational Nothingness. [1, 2]

This is how we typically perceive ourselves and our environment in general: that which exists—meaning, that which is present—is what demands consideration, and we act upon it. It is a simple, plausible, matter-of-fact practice for a potential, straightforward realization. All attempts to contemplate the question of "Nothingness" harbor diverse approaches by different individuals—or, as the German thinker Martin Heidegger formulated it in his ostensibly definition-lacking phrasing: the differing variations of the inquiring "Dasein" (Being-there). [1, 2, 3]

Descartes, who discussed the principles of philosophy in the 17th century, argued regarding the "Nothing": "…it is quite manifest that nothing has no qualities or properties; and where we perceive any, there must necessarily be found a thing or substance on which they depend." [1]. According to him, any reference to Nothingness in and of itself is erroneous, since it cannot be conceived from the outset without the prior existence of a "Being" (Is) that once was and is no longer present. Conversely, Heidegger, who conceived his ideas in the 20th century, posited: “Science wants to know nothing about the nothing.” [2]. [1, 2, 3]

Heidegger explains his interpretation of the Nothing through the lens of "Being" (Is). For Heidegger, Being constitutes the "totality of Dasein," which signifies: "being held out into the nothing." [3][4]. From this, he arrives at a sweeping assertion that the Nothing precedes Being. At the inception of his thought regarding the Nothing, he stated that: “The nothing is more original than the 'not' [negation].”. Indeed, this implies that if something does not exist—meaning, the very possibility of its existence—it is primarily "Nothing," and only its existence subsequently allows for its negation. The "Nothing" originates within us, and not solely because Descartes was correct regarding the existence of the object or substance upon which the Nothing depends—namely, man and his thought. [1, 2, 3, 4]

"Nothingness" is generated the moment a sperm and an egg unite to commence life, yet its tangible role begins at birth and persists until the end of life, by virtue of our being mortal—possessing an end and being conscious of our "finitude.". In our absolute absence, only an authentic "Being" (Is) will remain, and only we, as human beings, have been endowed with the capacity to utilize and comprehend what it harbors by the mere virtue of its existence. It can therefore be stated clearly that the "Nothing" is, in fact, a pure human becoming that is conscious of its own finitude. [1]

"The Nothing" is not merely the non-being concealed within the dread of vanishing from the authentic "Being"; rather, it is the essence of our ontic state, meaning that the concept of authentic "Being" will unfold even without us. But what of the concept of an authentic "Nothing"? In truth, it is impossible to even formulate this as a coherent thought. We carry our creation out of the Nothing from the moment of our inception until our end and our return into the Nothing. Is there not something substantial in this? I shall not deliberate here on the question of human existence since the dawn of cosmic existence, or its unfolding over time within the existing authentic "Being.". Either way, the "Nothing" originates within the human "Being.". [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

"Being" is divided into two mandatory dimensions: the aforementioned authentic "Being," and the potential "Being," which constitutes the core of the totality of "beings" through which we construct a world—inventing material substances and concepts out of the existence of the authentic "Being," relying on theories, philosophies, and worldviews. Heidegger amplifies this by stating that in investigating "Being," we must speak in accordance with a triad: the relation to the world (to Being), the attitude (of human existence), and the invasion (of the being called man): [1, 2]

"That to which the relation to the world refers is beings themselves—and besides that, nothing. [1]

That from which every attitude takes its guidance is beings themselves—and besides that, nothing…" [6]

Furthering his explicit stance regarding Being and its place, he clarifies his view on the "Nothing," stating that negation is a specific intellectual operation, the omission of which would dissolve the Nothing. [1]

"But even if we disregard the fact that the relation between negation and the nothing requires investigation, how are we—as finite creatures—supposed to make the whole of beings in its totality accessible as such, and let alone accessible to us? At most, we can grasp the totality of beings in an 'idea,' negate the imagined in thought, and 'think' it as negated. However, the nothing is nothing, and it is impossible for a difference to exist between the 'imagined' nothing and the 'authentic' nothing, if indeed the nothing embodies utter indifferency. Is the 'authentic' nothing, then, that hidden yet absurd concept of an ontic nothing?" [7] [1]

From my perspective, Heidegger’s "imagined nothing" is largely analogous to the potential "Being" that I yearn for, whereas the "authentic nothing" constitutes absolute nothingness. He describes anxiety (dread) and the manner in which it exposes the nothing, emphasizing that anxiety is not a comprehension of the nothing [8]. “The nothing does not attract; it is essentially repelling, but repulsion, as it is, is the referral—which enables slipping away—to the slipping away of beings as a whole.”. It effectively redirects into itself from within the human "Being," and as such, it enables from the very outset the necessity of creating a potential "Being.". [1, 2, 3]

The "Nothing" encapsulates an entire world in terms of the perception of our existence; as such, its impact and existing resources in the world today overflow far beyond authentic "Being.". Because humanity holds within its fundamental state the totality of the "Being" it manufactures, potential "Being" is a direct byproduct of absolute Nothingness. That same "Nothing" is finite and terminal, empty and hollow, lacking concrete definition, and threatening. The totality of potential "Being"—alongside parts of authentic "Being" that have lost their authenticity due to our direct intervention—is derived from the "Nothing" with one explicit objective: to fill it as much as possible in order to obliterate it. The inability to fully replete the "Nothing" does not imply a cessation of action, but rather intensifies it. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The "Nothing" brings with it an indefatigable drive manifested in the generation of "Being.". Logic suggests that if "Being" were the primary mover, its mere presence would result in the cancellation of the "Nothing.". This same "Nothing" operates similarly across all human beings, yet fluctuates according to individual needs (Nietzsche’s "Will to Power"). [1, 2, 3]

"Nothingness" is a constellation of distinct symptoms embedded within the human structure: needs, knowledge, and intellect. The realized products of potential "Being" are virtually infinite, and the prime mover of all "the products of our creation" is none other than the "Nothing.". In attempting to describe it, I would say that the "Nothing" operates as an absolute, infinite vacuum that we cannot contain within any layer of our being; hence, its power is immense and demanding to an unimaginable degree. The capacity to extract a potential "Being" out of the "Nothing" to answer various needs yielded the concept of "something from nothing" (creatio ex nihilo). [1, 2, 3, 4]

"Being," as stated, is composed of the perception of its totality: authentic "Being"—which includes the tangible "Being-here" of man (i.e., the "flesh" present in the world) and nature for the most part—and potential "Being," which characterizes solely the cognitive-philosophical "Being-there" (Dasein) attributed to human beings. Non-human animals also possess the finitude that characterizes human beings. However, lacking the capacity to comprehend the "Nothing," they are, ostensibly, simply a "Being" during their tenure here, and a simplistic "Nothing" upon their departure—notwithstanding the fact that a type of grief over the loss of kin can be observed among certain animals. [1, 2, 3]

Insofar as the "Nothing" acts as a primary driving force, it leads to the creation of a certain potential "Being" aimed at generating meanings that insulate human beings from the perilous possibility of being "sucked" into the metaphysical, infinite Nothingness. The capacity for actualization is an overarching, defining description of the human being's ability to create a potential "Being" that segregates them from the "Nothing," leading to individual self-actualization within and as part of surrounding society. In Nietzsche’s terminology, this is the "Will to Power," which describes one of the most critical human motives for self-actualization and for creating a present, influential "Being" that shapes, and is shaped by, authentic "Being.". Within the collective existing definitions, there are many avenues of realization that can be actualized, and many more are bound to be added, all originating from within the "Nothing.". The 'possibility of self-actualization'—as it is casually called—drives the Will to Power, and populates within itself an infinity of potential "Being" that shifts according to the characteristics of culture, society, and politics. All of these shift according to the era and a consensus bearing a specific, shifting "historical mission.". [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

The primary possibility of actualization, which stems from the very fact of our being distinct human beings—in relation to, out of the existing, in a primary order of priority—is the realization of ourselves as a totality, whose objective is to persist and be; that is, in continuity. Our very being constitutes authentic "Being" as a existence driven by a basic need, part of which is unassigned to potential "Being," yet driven in its importance by the "Nothing" that unfolds to consume us. The possibility of our cancellation by the "Nothing" is no fiction. Firstly, because the possibility of extinction is not subject to manipulation; and secondly, because if the possibility of our "existing" within the Nothing as "Being" alone were certain, we would persist as "Being" without any "Nothing" whatsoever. [1, 2, 3, 4]

As noted, this possibility of realization is a primary driving force for which human beings yearn by the very nature of their being. This is a survival mechanism characterizing the totality of living "Being," not merely human beings. It is possible that the absence of the "Nothing" from non-human life could, ostensibly, lead to its swifter extinction due to an inability to care (a byproduct of developed thought) for its own being. Yet, in this human care lies a paradox that may serve as a catalyst for extinction—for instance, in the compulsive need to pre-emptively locate external and internal factors causing mortality, and the capacity to find a "countermeasure" or "solution" such as a cure against it. [1, 2, 3, 4]

In conclusion, it can be stated that two main layers exist for actualizing the possibility of the continuity of the human race: a natural drive characterizing the totality of life, and a perpetual anxiety driven by the "Nothing.". [1]

The sole "Being" that precedes the "Nothing," as stated, is our image and likeness. The origin of the trait that enables us to create worlds lies far beyond our capacity for comprehension; yet, from the existing results manifested in reality, the conclusion is derived that it is indeed a unique trait whose wondrous capacities successfully cloak its own origin. Given that man introduced a "potential Being" which was actualized out of personal nothingness via the manipulation of authentic Being, the authentic Being itself that underwent this transformation is no longer pure. Nevertheless, I will continue to utilize this terminology as it remains the closest approximation for my purposes. [1, 2]
